Mornington Harbour is in need of protection as it is unsafe in North and Northwest winds. Our aim is to achieve a safe, all weather, multi-use community harbour in South Eastern Port Phillip.

The Need
- Mornington has been designated a Safe Harbour for over 20 years by various government bodies, yet it remains grossly unsafe and generally unusable in Northerly weather patterns
- Port Phillip has no open access all weather Safe harbour between Blairgowrie and Sandringham
- Melbourne's boating public requires Safe Harbour access in times of changing weather
- Public launching and retrieval facilities for recreationsal users are currently unsafe in Northerly weather conditions
- Current facilities in theHarbour for moored boats, visiting craftand club members are again unsafe in Northerly weather
The Plan
To establish a Safe Harbour in all weather conditions for all of the boating public that:
- Is largely self funding
- Is environmentally sensitive to water flow/quality and surrounding beaches
- Is athetically sympathetic to local environment
- Is located within the existing harbour
- Is similar in size to the present mooring area footprint
- Comprises construction of a wave screen suitable for the location
- Enhances the marine environment
- Delegates management of the marina and boating precinct services to MBHL
Mornington township has always had a close and personal relationship with Port Phillip. Its simple wooden wharf has a long tradition of providing a loading and landing place for countless Bay and Bass Strait fishermen and for ferries and other vessels with holidaymakers and day-trippers.
With Mornington harbour and surrounding beaches as the epicentre of local foreshore activities, basic but limited protection has been provided by a pier of historical sugnificance.
However, due to exposure during northerly and northwesterly weather Mornington harbour remains vulnerable and dangerous, yet the answer to this issue is simple - the concept, delivery and ongoing maintenance of a commercially viable, Safe Harbour.
As the most prominant user of the current harbour, Mornington Yacht Club initiated its conversion to a Safe Harbour by sponsoring a Not-for-Profit public company known as Mornington Boat Haven Limited (MBHL) to investigate, develop and ultimately manage this project for the benefit of the public generally, together with MYC members.
