
History
The Mornington Safe Harbour proposal has been in development for more than 20 years. Aspects of the project have evolved and improve over this time, ensuring the current proposal combines all of the best and most important elements. Everyone involved in the project over this time has been committed to securing a fantastic facility for the Mornington community and all harbour and beach users.
Key aspects of the proposal’s recent history are outlined below.
Mornington Safe Harbour Proposal and Environmental Effects Statement – March 2010
The current proposal and Environmental Effects statement have been developed in conjunction with Sinclair Knight Merz consulting. Community consultation was an important aspect of the preparation of this proposal, with community feedback directing and influencing the proposal wherever possible. Our Bays Vision: The Bays and Maritime Initiative - 2009
In 2009 the Victorian State Government launched their Bays and Maritime Initiative. This policy focused on locations identified by the Boating Coastal Action plan as strategic investment sites, which includes Mornington. The government has designated Parks Victoria to plan, coordinate and manage these key maritime areas as they are improved and developed. Funding for Pier Protection – 2006
In 2006 the Victorian State Government allocated $3.5 million for Parks Victoria to undertake restoration and protection works for the Mornington Pier. This work is to be completed in the 2009-2010 financial year.
Environmental Effects Statement – 2005
In 2005 the Minister for Planning determined that an Environmental Effects Statement would be required. The focus of the EES included:
- Coastal processes with a particular focus on any affects on Mothers Beach
- Water quality
- Marine ecology
- Heritage issues
A Technical Reference Group was established to oversee the EES and included representatives from the Department of Sustainablity and Environment, Parks Victoria, Environment Protection Authority, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council and Mornington Yacht Club.
